LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday will outline Democratic plans for the final months of the year after a first half of 2023 that saw the party roll back decades of Republican measures while implementing their own liberal agenda.

The second-term Democratic governor's policy priorities, which will be outlined during a “What's Next Address," include a call for paid family and medical leave, a 100% clean energy standard and the codification of protections ensured by the Affordable Care Act, according to her office.

The biggest change for N.C. State this season isn’t all the new faces on offense or the leadership turnover on defense or the departure of uber-reliable kicker Christoper Dunn (and he will be missed) or the giant new video board blocking out the sun at the north end of Carter-Finley Stadium.

LOS ANGELES — A third woman has sued Nick Carter for alleged sexual assault and is accusing the Backstreet Boys performer of forcing her to have sex with him on multiple occasions in 2003 when she was 15 and he was 23.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and top prosecutors from 13 other states are uniting in support of efforts to compensate people sickened by exposure to radiation during nuclear weapons testing. The Democratic officials sent a letter Wednesday to congressional leaders, saying it's time for the federal government to give back to those who sacrificed so much. The letter refers to the estimated half-million people who lived within a 150-mile radius of where the world’s first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico in 1945. It also pointed to thousands in Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Montana and Guam who are currently not eligible under the existing compensation program.

Framber Valdez retired the first 10 Boston batters on Wednesday and took a shutout into the sixth inning to help the Houston Astros beat the Red Sox 7-4 and complete their first sweep at Fenway Park. Houston has won five straight as it fights for a third consecutive AL West title. The Astros entered the day essentially tied with the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. All three teams remain in contention for the AL wild-card spots if they falter. The Red Sox lost for the fifth time in six games and are in fifth in the race for the three AL wild-card berths.

ATHENS, Ga. — Several front-line Georgia players who have missed extended periods of preseason practice because of injuries have made their way back to the field this week. The question now is whether that means the Bulldogs will play them Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper put the Philadelphia Phillies ahead in the eighth inning with his 300th home run, but Brandon Drury capped a three-run ninth with a tiebreaking, two-run homer than lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 10-8 victory on Wednesday that prevented a three-game sweep.

Rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt seemingly wasn’t satisfied exceeding training camp expectations for the New York Giants. The third-round draft pick put more pressure on himself Wednesday, changing his jersey number from 84 to 13. For those not familiar with Giants’ history, that’s the number Odell Beckham Jr. had with New York in five-year, highlight-filled stint. Hyatt said he was a Beckham fan as a youth. Beckham had 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games as a rookie. Hyatt caught 15 TDs for Tennessee last season. Beckham is now with Baltimore.

Connecticut U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy says he's tested positive for COVID-19. The Democrat announced Wednesday that he tested positive the day after experiencing mild symptoms. He says because he tested positive he's rescheduling his annual “Walk Across Connecticut” for later this year. The 50-year-old Democrat has been donning his shorts and T-shirt and walking across much of the state since 2016. Last year he walked 69 miles through 14 towns over four days, walking about 15 to 20 miles a day.

The Marion County sheriff in Indianapolis has announced changes to a prisoner transport policy following the killing of a sheriff’s deputy during an escape attempt. Most significantly, Sheriff Kerry Forestal said Wednesday that all off-site medical transports will require two deputies. Authorities have said Deputy John Durm was alone in transporting murder suspect Orlando Mitchell on July 10 when the inmate used the chain of his handcuffs to choke the officer while being returned to the Criminal Justice Center in Indianapolis following a hospital visit. The 34-year-old Mitchell has been charged with murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against him.

The New York Giants surprised many experts by making the playoffs last season in Brian Daboll's first season as coach. It was their first postseason appearance since 2016 and they won a wild-card playoff game before being eliminated by the NFC champion Eagles. While the schedule for the 2023 season is tougher, the Giants are a more potent offensive team and the defense is much improved, particularly against the run. If that translates to the field, New York should make the playoffs again. The previous time they went to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons was 2007-08.

Nebraska's governor has signed an executive order directing state agencies to use narrow definitions of a person's sex. Republican Gov. Jim Pillen on Wednesday signed an order defining “female” and “male” as a person’s sex assigned at birth. He says it's common sense that men don't belong in women's spaces. He has cited prisons and bathrooms as examples. Oklahoma earlier this month became the first state to adopt similar rules through executive order. Pillen says Nebraska is the second. Pillen's order took effect immediately and will expire if Nebraska lawmakers pass a law on trans athletes.
