The last time we checked in with former Staten Island boxer Andrea Moore she was named president of the New York City Department of Sanitation’s boxing team.

The Rossville resident had to give up the sport she loved as a youth after taking it up after being bullied as a teenager after she underwent cochlear implant surgery to restore her hearing.

Once deaf, should could no longer risk trauma to the head, as the implants are very sensitive so she had to give up fighting.

But her new role as the DSNY boxing head was just the right medicine for her boxing fix.

Now, Moore is planning a boxing event -- pitting the DSNY’s Strongest vs. the NYPD’s Finest -- to be staged at the St. Peter’s Boys High School gymnasium on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

General admission tickets are $30, while ringside tickets cost $50. Doors open at 6 p.m.

“I am proud to be able to host our very first Fight Night ever hosting for the New York City Department of Sanitation,” she said. “My goal is to get our department to the elite level of recognition as the NYPD, FDNY and others in the boxing community and not only that, to start a new annual tradition in Staten Island as well all at the same time to raise money for wonderful charities like NYC Cops & Kids Boxing. I grew up in that program so it has a special place with me.

“(The DSNY) are the unsung heroes of this city so we deserve to be able to share our pride together with the city agencies and our community.”

While the event may be more than three months away, Moore is now preparing for the big night. Sponsors are needed for the event.

“The Title Sponsor will have their logo placed right underneath where it says ‘Sponsored by’ (on the flyer),” said Moore.

Tickets are expected to go on sale soon at DSNYBOXINGTEAM.com.

Annual Mike Campbell Sr. fundraiser is Saturday

The fifth annual Mike Campbell Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser, held in honor of the Staten Island Orioles founder, is set to take place this Saturday at the Verrazano Babe Ruth League from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event generates funds for an annual scholarship, which is granted to one ascending Orioles player who is graduating from high school.

Campbell was the architect behind the Staten Island Orioles travel baseball program, which has been a home to hundreds of local youth and HS ballplayers since the mid-2000s. The longtime travel baseball coach was just 57 when he passed away in 2021 after a bout with lung cancer.

Campbell was a tobacco user and smoker, which was attributed to his diagnosis. The Orioles aim to raise awareness of the deadly effects of tobacco and its use in baseball culture. Potential scholarship recipients are tasked with researching the effects of both smoking and smokeless tobacco and submitting a research paper.

In 2021, the organization, which is now run by Campbell’s sons Steven and Michael, held its inaugural scholarship fundraiser. The event raised $10,000.

Designed to be enjoyed by all ages, Family Day offers a variety of engaging activities. At the heart of the event is the alumni softball game, where former players reunite to honor Coach Campbell and relive their playing days. Guests can enjoy delicious food from food trucks, music from a DJ, and exciting raffle prizes. One of the highlights is the dunk tank, where attendees get to dunk their favorite coaches—all in good fun and all for a good cause, as every throw contributes directly to the scholarship fund.
